Loopt lichtbrons tot paarsrood uit, daarna groen, kleurt van geel-oranje naar paarsrood in de herfst. Rode bloemen, 2 cm, in februari, vooral bij oudere exemplaren. Groeit op alle gronden, liefst vochthoudende. Groeit niet in verharding. Goed winterhard.
