Van nature voorkomend in het laaggebergte van de Himalaya tussen Kashmir en West-Nepal. Midden 19e eeuw in Europa geïntroduceerd. Hoogte 9-12 m. Het blad is 15-20 cm lang en 2-6 cm breed, getand en loopt bronsgroen uit. Gele herfstkleur. Bloeit overvloedig, in mei-juni, met wit-roze cilindervormige tuilen. Kastanjes zijn in een bolster gevat. De grijsbruine schors bladdert op latere leeftijd af. Groeit op alle goed gedraineerde gronden en is vrij van de kastanjemineermot. In India wordt de indica in de traditionele geneeskunst ingezet bij huidaandoeningen en reuma.
