Piramidaal tot ovale halfopen kruin, 8-10 m hoog. Glanzend donkergroen ovaal tot elliptische- eirond gezaagd blad, dat rood uitloopt. Magnifieke scharlaken tot roodpaarse herfstverkleuring. Groene bloemen in bundels, september. Kleine gevleugelde nootjes. Lichtbruine gegroefde stam. Goed iepenziekteresistent. Groeit op alle gronden, ook kalkrijke en natte in de winter. Verdraagt verharding, strooizout en luchtverontreiniging.
